Year-End Portfolio Checklist

There’s just over one month remaining in 2023. When we get to Thanksgiving week, it feels as if the rest of the year flies by. If you haven’t done so already, now would be a great time to formulate a year-end strategy. Like other areas of the balance sheet, the investment portfolio requires substantial reflection, thought and planning. Here are a few ideas to help get you started:
  • Evaluate portfolio for strengths and weaknesses.
  • Consider tax loss harvesting.
    • Depending on the situation, it could make sense for 2023 or even early 2024.
  • If selling bonds, what is the goal?
    • Taking least amount of loss?
    • Lowest take out yields?
  • Repositioning the portfolio into higher book yields utilizing swap scenarios.
  • Check yearly maturity buckets and plug gaps in future cash flows.
  • Formulate a rate bias for 2024.
    • What is your Fed outlook?
      • Use your rate bias for decision making going forward.

It’s important to start thinking about year-end strategies now, while there’s still time left.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving, from the investment team at Country Club Bank.
