Let Us Give Thanks!

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held in November.

As we prepare to give thanks, we thought it might be fun to review some little known Thanksgiving trivia.

Six states-Minnesota, Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia and Indiana account for nearly two-thirds of the 250 million turkeys that will be raised this year.

The National Turkey Federation estimated that about one fifth of the annual total of 240 million turkeys consumed in the United States-are consumed on Thanksgiving Day.

The average weight of turkeys purchased for Thanksgiving dinners are 15 pounds.

Cranberry production in the U.S. is estimated to be around 760 million pounds and total U.S. production of pumpkin is expected to exceed 1.5 billion pounds.

According to the Guinness book of World records, the largest pumpkin pie ever baked weighed 3,699 pounds and measured over 20 feet long. It included 1,641 pounds of pumpkin, 113 gallons of evaporated milk, 283 dozen eggs, 549 pounds of sugar, 6.4 pounds of salt, 12.8 pounds of cinnamon, 3.66 pounds of pumpkin spice and 440 sheets of crust.

Finally take a look at the price screen for the DOW since its recent high in early October. As you can see it is retesting its low of October 29th. Maybe the best thing about this Thanksgiving is it requires the equity markets to be closed.
